Gypsum is used as fertilizer and is also one of the important constituent in many forms of plaster and in blackboard chalk. It is a soft sulphate mineral comprising of calcium sulphate dehydrate. One of the variety of gypsum is finely grained white or lightly tinted also known as 'alabaster' was widely used in the making of sculptures by many cultures like Ancient Egypt, Ancient Rome in the past. 

It is also used in finishing of ceilings and walls, concrete blocks for construction also as a plaster component used in casting mould, modeling and surgical splints. The yearly production of gypsum in India is nearly about 25000MT approximately.
